The state of Maryland recently adopted several codes from the National Fire Protection Association including its NFPA 1, Fire Code, NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, and NFPA 70 National Electrical Code, according to a statement issued this week by the association.

NFPA 1 establishes basic fire prevention requirements, while NFPA 101 creates standards for building design and construction to protect occupants against dangers caused by fire, smoke and toxic fumes. NFPA 70, which is the most widely used code in the U.S., sets standards for safe electrical installations. Each code went into effect on Jan. 1, 2010.

"Maryland 's implementation of the latest editions of NFPA 1, NFPA 101 and several other documents provides us with the tools necessary to continue providing the highest level of protection for the people of our state," said Maryland State Fire Marshal William E. Barnard.
