Review of cameras effectiveness finds only a 'modest' impact on crime levels

Closed circuit television in city centres, housing estates and on public transport does not have a significant impact on crime, according to a Home Office-funded study.

The review of research into the effectiveness of cameras found they have only a "modest" impact on crime levels.

The review, which was carried out by the Campbell Collaboration, found CCTV cameras worked best cutting break-ins in car parks which are well lit and have attendants on duty.

All 43 police forces in England and Wales are to be sent the research this summer.

Between 1999 and 2001 pounds 170 million was spent installing CCTV schemes in town and city centres, car parks and residential areas..

As well as questioning whether CCTV cuts crime, the report highlights fears it could increase offences by giving victims a "false sense of security".

The report, in conjunction with Cambridge University, revealed more evidence is needed on when and where CCTV works best.
