States Need Help Implementing REAL ID

July 23, 2007

NEW YORK, July 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is a statement from Neil Berro, Executive Director, Coalition for a Secure Driver's License:

The Coalition for a Secure Driver's License, representing more than a thousand members in 48 states advocating higher standards for state-issued driver's licenses, urges Congress to fund the REAL ID Act. The REAL ID Act was a key recommendation of the 9/11 Commission designed to protect American lives -- and a simple matter of common sense.

The REAL ID Act calls for secure state-issued driver's licenses in America to keep those powerful documents out of terrorist hands. The benefits of a secure driver's license are enormous: in addition to improving homeland security, secure IDs will reduce identity theft and increase voter and Social Security integrity. A repeal of REAL ID would surely be disastrous. This law needs federal funding. Americans deserve no less.

About the Coalition:

The Coalition for a Secure Driver's License is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation started by 9/11 family members and other concerned citizens to advocate tighter identification requirements for state-issued driver's licenses. The Coalition's single purpose is to keep licenses out of the hands of terrorists. The Coalition educates the American public about the benefits of a secure driver's license and encourages volunteer activism and donations. The group is actively seeking supporters who are interested in rolling up their sleeves and working to strengthen the nation's homeland security.
