OmniVision in Volume Production With its First 1/4-Inch, 3-Megapixel System-On-A-Chip Sensor

Feb. 13, 2008

BARCELONA , Spain , Feb. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Mobile World Congress -- OmniVision Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: OVTI), the world's largest supplier of CMOS image sensors, today announced it has started volume production of its OV3640, the first 1/4-inch, 3-megapixel system-on-a-chip (SOC) CameraChip(TM) sensor with integrated image stabilization and auto focus control. OmniVision also announced that it has already secured multiple tier one handset customer design wins for the OV3640.

The highly integrated OV3640 is built with OmniVision's 1.75-micron OmniPixel3(TM) architecture and has an advanced, feature-rich image signal processor (ISP) embedded on the chip. Key features include auto focus control and image stabilization that require no external memory or other external components. The OV3640's 3-megapixel array can operate up to 15 frames per second in full resolution. An integrated two-lane, high-speed MIPI interface and standard parallel interface with optional JPEG compression allows camera phone designs with existing baseband processors to upgrade to 3-megapixel cameras.

"The OV3640's superior performance, 1/4-inch form factor, new features and sensor-level improvements have enabled OmniVision to secure several key design wins in the handset market," said Per Rosdahl, Director of Marketing at OmniVision. "We believe that this CameraChip product will be a key enabler for the fast adoption of the 3-megapixel resolution in the mainstream handset market segment."
