ASIS International sponsors conference on global terrorism

26th annual conference brings together government and industry to focus on unconventional security challenges

Alexandria, Va. (Feb. 7, 2008) – High-level government and security experts will share strategies and insights on preparing for the unexpected during the 26th Annual Government/Industry Conference on Global Terrorism, held March 17-19 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Arlington, Va. This year's event is titled "Unconventional Threats: What Keeps Security Professionals Up at Night?"

Pandemics, improvised explosive devices, "homegrown" radical terrorists, cyber attacks and identity theft are a few of the topics to be explored. The conference is sponsored by the ASIS Council on Global Terrorism, Political Instability and International Crime. ASIS International is the preeminent society for security management professionals.

"This conference will bring together security professionals, law enforcement officials and government representatives who plan, manage and/or respond to threats posed by terrorism," says ASIS President Timothy L. Williams, CPP. "The conference will address the latest, most sophisticated terrorist and other unconventional threats. It is a 'must' for everyone concerned with the safety of their most valuable resource—their personnel."

Scheduled speakers and instructors include Michael Bouchard, CPP, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms; Charlie Allen, Department of Homeland Security; Steven Lund, Intel Corp.; Pierre Thomas, ABC News; Tim Cadigan, Phillip Morris; Marcy Form, Immigration and Customs Enforcement; Mary Griggs, Defense Security Service; Howard Schmidt, former White House cyber security adviser; and Mitchell Silber and Arvin Bhatt, New York Police Department.

Conference sessions will include:

·Radicalization of the West Review findings of the study Time magazine called "The most sophisticated government analysis of the homegrown terrorism threat to be made public in the United States." Discuss similar behavior patterns in 11 anti-Western terrorism plots.

·Weapons of Mass Effect: Preparation and Response The ultimate nightmare—is there anything we can do beyond duct tape and plastic rolls? A panel will add real-world solutions to your toolkit, outline available government resources, and show how they fit into your security and crisis response plans.

·Navigating the Minefield: Prudent and Proportional Pandemic Planning A panel of international experts will provide practical pandemic planning advice that is jargon-free and grounded in the latest developments and strategies.

·Media's Role in Security Incidents ABC News' Pierre Thomas will address how the media look at you, your industry and your business. Learn what to expect from the press and how to handle media relations when an incident happens on your watch.

·Improvised Explosive Devices Did you know we see several hundred IEDs in the United States every year? A panel will talk about IED threats and tactics and how to protect against and react to these challenges.
