This week, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced instructions for state, local and tribal governments to apply for more than $2.7 billion in funds for 13 specific fiscal 2010 grant programs. The grants cover such areas as state and urban security, emergency preparation and management and protection of critical infrastructure. Organizations can begin to apply for the grants immediately.
Guidance kits are available online at www.fema.gov/grants. Patrick Fiel, public safety advisor for ADT, said one of the keys to winning a grant is to fully prepare before submitting an application.
“That preparation should include a complete security risk assessment to identify the strengths and weaknesses of a project,” he said. “The government officials reviewing these applications like to see that there was some time spent in the submission. Including the risk assessment along with application gives the reviewers a better idea of what a grant will really do for an organization.”
The deadline for grant submissions begin as early as January 22 and continue through until April.
