Good reads on school violence prevention

Aug. 19, 2009

I've been spending some time today reading about school/campus violence, and I wanted to post a few links for our PublicSafetyWatch blog readers as reference reading material. There's a lot online, and here are some materials I'd suggest as primers. Many of these relate to general violence, and some deal with active shooter scenarios on school and college campuses:

Virginia Youth Violence Project
(very good clear, concise presentation of information on preventing and responding to violence in schools)

Virginia Model for Student Threat Assessment
(excellent paper by Dewey Cornell, Ph.D., from U.Va.)

The Final Report and Findings of the Safe School Initiative: Implications for the prevention of school attacks in the United States
(wonderful document jointly produced by the U.S. Secret Service and the U.S. Department of Education)

National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center
(clearing house site with information on all areas of youth violence, this specific content area focuses on school violence, including bullying, gang-related violence, violence against teachers and a lot more)

If you have other suggestions for excellent reading on school violence mitigation, please share them with other readers by posting them in the comments area.
