Welcome to Lasky’s World
Let’s get ready to rumble! As a huge boxing fan that still remains one of my favorite opening lines. I thought it only appropriate to use it as I launch my first blog. As a 20 year veteran of the security industry I have seen an evolution of both technology and culture. Today we are at a cross road that is not only influenced by the rapid progression of widgets, but increasingly by the myopic view of our nation’s politicians. In the coming weeks and months I will be sharing my opinions, views of the world and even some humorous insight into myriad topics not exclusive to security.
The bottom line here is we are looking to open an interactive discussion on issues and events that are shaping security policy and political agendas. You might not always like my views, but I will guarantee you an honest give-and-take and hope to get you talking back! We may not be able to solve all the world’s problems, but at least for me, I’ll feel a whole lot better just being able to shoot off my mouth in an open forum. Join the party and bring an opinion!
Uh oh… the blogosphere will never be the same… =)
Hi Steve,
Just read the emailed newsletter for SIW on 9/11.
I remember they day very clearly, I was working from home for the UK security portal Securitypark. My wife called me out of the office as soon as the newsflash came on one of the news channels. We could not believe what we were seeing, one of the trade towers burning ¾ of the way up. I rang into the office to see if my editor, who was an American guy, was aware of what was happening.
It turned out like most people at work, he had no idea – I in the middle of explaining what had happened when they confirmed a second jet had come crashing into tower two.
I carried on giving live commentary for around an hour, the guys in the office tried to get onto the various news websites to see what was happening but the majority were locked out with to much traffic, so our editor stayed on the phone with me while events unfolded so he could put out the information on email newsletters to our subscribers.
I remember as I was watching and passing the information on feeling so numb and shocked by what had happened. The gross scale of the attack, and the ease in which it had happened was sickening. No warnings just a straight attack and maximum kill.
I agree that as of 9/11 a world war was declared on terrorism, but I think, people in Europe did not see it as a terrorist war on them just an American president needing to be seen kicking back, until the Madrid, Egypt and London bombings. Now every country is living on its nerve ends waiting to see, not if it will happen to them, but when.
I also agree with you that unfortunately this campaign will at least go on for another decade – my big concern is that as more terrorist cells are discovered and arrested the realism that they are UK, US, French, Spanish. Etc… born and home grown is the more scary. Anyone of us could be working with, living next door, have grown up and played as kids with a potential terrorist. It scares me the thought of where this campaign of terror against the innocent is going. At present they like the theatrical terrorism attack, but how long will it be before they get their hands on something more horrific and such as a dirty bomb.
It makes me sad as a parent for the future of my children.
