Secondary airport checkpoints-what are they really based on?
By Natalia Kosk - Tuesday August 11, 2009It seems obvious that a traveler who looks suspicious would most likely go through a secondary checkpoint process at the airport, but I can’t help trying to figure out on what basis do airport security officials pull travelers aside for an additional screening? An article published today in the Chicago Tribune discusses the security checkpoint process at airports and supports the idea that checkpoints seemed to have “calmed down,” with travelers knowing the standard checkpoint process in the U.S.: removing their shoes and pulling out their laptops from bags and knowing not to carry liquids no more then three ounces in their carry-on bags past the security point. But having just come back from a recent trip to Europe makes me... -
Remembering a Chicago Hero Richard Scheidt
By Natalia Kosk - Wednesday April 8, 2009Natural disasters are inevitable and in the case of fires, most often then not deadly. My condolences go out to the family of retired Chicago firefighter Richard Scheidt, whose death at the age of 81 brought much heartfelt response from numerous Chicago Tribune readers who heard of the news yesterday. According to the Tribune, “Scheidt died Monday at his home in southwest suburban Oak Lawn, a day after he was brought home from the hospital following a minor stroke a month ago, according to relatives.” Scheight is remembered for his courage and bravery in the 1958 Our Lady of the Angels school fire on Chicago’s West side, one of the worst tragedies in Chicago which killed 92 children and three nuns. Many victims... -
Driving Under the Influence…of too much technology?
By Natalia Kosk - Tuesday February 17, 2009First and foremost, I need to apologize to you. Keeping busy month to month with all the tasks that go into putting out each issue of SD&I have definitely kept me more then busy. But that’s no reason for me to neglect my column or my readers. Besides that, I forget that blogging is a great way to get out any thoughts and emotions that can’t be expressed otherwise, which brings me to today’s topic. So after being away for a weekend, I was able to enjoy the thrills (insert sarcasm here) of a 4-hour road trip back home with all the other drivers on the road crossing the border from Wisconsin to Chicago. I’ll bravely admit it; yes, I threw some of the other drivers some dirty looks as I finally was able to get... -
ASIS 2008 kickoff event
By Natalia Kosk - Monday September 15, 2008From end-users to dealers, distributors to integrators, ASIS 2008, Atlanta, was already under way Sunday afternoon as many scrambled in finishing the setup of their booths. HID helped kick off Sunday night with a customer appreciation party at the Georgia Aquarium. A definite hit, take a look below at some of the pictures from the event. Just jellyfishing around... Mingling at the HID Customer Appreciation event... Swimming sharks overhead... Nancy, Locksmith Ledger publisher, braving the waters with the stingrays... -Natalia -
Fishing around in a roomful of sharks…
By Natalia Kosk - Thursday September 4, 2008 As the newest addition to the team of Security Dealer & Integrator magazine, I am realizing just how big an industry the security market is. In the past month as assistant editor of SD&I, my main focus, besides the essential editorial tasks that need to be done, has been in researching the industry and understanding the terminology that my surrounding peers toss back and forth amonst each other. Don't get me wrong-coming from a background of writing about industrial topics, as in the cranes and lifts we see on the roads during construction workzones, I came onboard with an understanding and skill-set in technical writing. But lets face it, cranes and lifts are definitely not in the same boat as CCTV systems, open-platform software...
