ESX 2010 Coverage Part 2: Consumer Driven Technology Drives the Show
By Natalia Kosk - Friday June 18, 2010Pittsburgh—The lines between consumer and security products are crossing. We caught a glimpse of this from some manufacturers earlier this year at ISC West, such as Panasonic Security Systems Company who showcased a consumer line of surveillance products, but it is more than present at this year’s ESX trade show in Pittsburgh, Pa. It is evident that customers want more control and manufacturers are giving them just that. From the residential side, we’re seeing more home security panels packed with multiple controls, a unified solution in which the homeowner can control settings and features such as audio, intercom, weather, messaging and lighting, right from their PDA or iPhone. This was present at this year’s ISC West in... -
ESX 2010: The Show is Just Getting Started
By Natalia Kosk - Wednesday June 16, 2010It’s not your typical ISC West or other trade show but as a first-time attendee at this year’s ESX 2010, I have to say that for a small show it definitely packs a punch thus far. Although the exhibit show floor opens today, many attendees flew in early to catch the number of educational sessions, including sessions presented by SD&I Editor Deborah O’Mara and Publisher Carol Enman. Stay tuned for video coverage on our site from both sessions: Migrating to IP Technology, which featured integrator panelists Tim Feury, president of Altec Systems, David Hood, president of First Alarm and Steve Washburn, sales and marketing manager for Pro-Tec Design, discussing the move from analog to IP-based systems; and Financing and Acquisitions... -

Music 'Rocks' Its Way Into PSA-TEC
By Natalia Kosk - Wednesday May 26, 2010Day two of PSA-TEC in Rosemont, Ill., sponsored by the PSA Security Network, based in Westminster, Colo., meant getting out on the show floor and getting in front of those exhibiting vendors to learn about solutions and ask any final questions, as it was the last day of exhibits. But the real treat was the planned evening keynote reception. With the help of newly added partner to the PSA Security Network, Samsung Techwin America, a global supplier of video surveillance products, the event brought Jeffrey “Skunk” Baxter, Grammy award-winning musician and national security advisor in front of hundreds of security professionals to present a discussion on “Asymmetrical Thinking in a Conventional World.” Now for those... -
Open Solutions Lead the Way
By Natalia Kosk - Monday April 26, 2010
If you’re not already investing in open solutions, there’s no time like the present to start. Open platform IP video management specialist Milestone Systems, partnered with Arecont Vision and Pivot3 , took their Complete IP Solution Show on the road, most recently making a pit stop at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Chicago. Attendees got a first-hand look at how Milestone’s Video Management System (VMS), Pivot3’s storage solutions and Arecont Vision’s megapixel cameras are integrated on one platform to provide a solution that covers all three aspects on a video surveillance system. “Our idea behind this was to take three companies that had leading technology in the IP field and really show how you can build a... -

Visonic Presents Trends and Strategies for the Industry
By Natalia Kosk - Saturday March 27, 2010March 24, Las Vegas—For most of those in the security industry, this year’s ISC West is not the first of these types of security trade shows. And in some cases, such as last year when the economy felt the hard impact of the recession, it’s quite easy to foresee how a show turnout may be. But this year is a whole other ball game and to be quite honest, it was refreshing to feel that renewed sense of energy in the air. Sure, we all want to showcase our new products and it’s nice to mingle face-to-face with folks that we connect with virtually on a daily basis. But let’s face it—with thousands of products targeting the different components of the security industry, it can get downright intimidating trying to compete against a... -
Panasonic Showcases Innovative Solutions at ISC West
By Natalia Kosk - Friday March 26, 2010It’s undeniable that the security industry, over the past few months, witnessed an increased number of mergers and acquisitions. And for 2010, IMS Research predicted that we will continue to see an increase in such developments. Partnerships between major technology providers will continue to add innovation to the industry and for those present at ISC West that have gone through such a process, the result of some of those acquisitions has been more than positive. Panasonic System Networks Company of America, Secaucus, N.J., presented a number of innovative solutions at this year’s ISC West, Las Vegas. “This year we brought a lot of systems together to create solutions for retail, small businesses and education to list a... -
Kwikset files lawsuit against Schlage Lock Company
By Natalia Kosk - Thursday March 4, 2010Kwikset, Lake Forest, Calif., provider of door hardware and locksets, amended a previously filed patent infringement lawsuit against Schlage Lock Company LLC, Carmel, Ind., alleging that Schlage’s advertising and packaging for the Schlage SecureKey product contains false and misleading statements—principally that SecureKey products are “10 Times more secure” than other lock products. The suit has been filed in the United States District Court for the District of Delaware. The patent infringement lawsuit alleges that Schlage SecureKey products infringe U.S. Patent No. 7,213,429 titled "Rekeyable Lock Assembly," issued on May 8, 2007 and U.S. Patent No. 7,434,431 titled "Keying System and Method," issued on October... -
Student Privacy Issues Center of Attention at Philadelphia School District
By Natalia Kosk - Monday February 22, 2010A lawsuit brought against the Lower Merion School District, a suburban Philadelphia school district, raises some serious questions and gives a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘crossing the line.’ The lawsuit accuses the school district for invading students privacy and spying on them at home, “potentially catching them in uncompromising situations,” through laptop Webcams issued by the school, as cited by the Associated Press. News of the remote monitoring of student activity at home broke after a school official addressed a student of inappropriate behavior at home. The school has since deactivated the tracking feature associated with the student laptops, which according to the school district, “will not be...
