Mark Weatherford named DHS cybersecurity chief

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced on Thursday that DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano has appointed Mark Weatherford to the newly created position of deputy under secretary for cybersecurity for the National Protection and Programs Directorate (NPPD).

Weatherford, who most recently served as the vice president and CSO of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), succeeds acting Deputy Under Secretary for Cybersecurity Greg Shaffer. In addition to his role at NERC, Weatherford has also served as CISO for California’s Office of Information Security and as CSO for the state of Colorado.

The DHS said it created the new position last month in recognition of the growing importance of cybersecurity to the nation.

Weatherford will start his new position next month.
