Home, business owners now required to register their burglar alarms with the city

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The City of Greenville recently passed an ordinance, requiring homeowners and business owners to register their burglar alarms with the City of Greenville.

Homeowners and business owners can now be fined $50 if there are four or more false alarms in a year. Ten or more false alarms could result in a fine of $500.

Sgt. Jason Rampey of the Greenville Police Department said the ordinance is to reduce a large number of false alarms which consume officers' time.

Rampey said it's important for people to know how to disarm an alarm system.
