Napolitano announces more than $250M in transit security grants

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced on Monday an estimated $253 million in grants that will be available to state and local governments for transit security improvements in 2010 through its Transit Security Grant Program.

According to a statement issued by the DHS, TSGP awards are given to the owners and operators of transit systems including intercity bus, commuter bus, ferries and passenger rail, based upon their ability to reduce risk.

"These transit grants play a major role in our efforts to work with our state, local, tribal, territorial, and private sector partners to build a national culture of readiness and resilience,” Napolitano said in the statement. “This year’s guidance focuses on maximizing efficiency and value while prioritizing risk in awarding grants to strengthen our nation’s transportation security.”

All applications for the TSGP program are due by Feb. 18. For more information, visit
