Jan. 7, 2009

Earlier this week, city officials in Canandaigua, N.Y., passed a law that will charge residents and business owners a fee should they suffer more than two false fire alarms a year.

The fee, which authorities hope will reduce the number of false calls firefighters have to respond to, was set at $100 for the third false alarm and $150 for any additional violation.

According to published reports, the city expects to bring in about $2,500 in false alarm fees this year.
