Report: Mount Rushmore lacks proper security

ATLANTA, October 22, 2009 - According to a report published Thursday by United Press International, Mount Rushmore National Memorial lacks an adequate security system or park ranger force to protect visitors at the South Dakota monument.

The review of the monument’s security, which was detailed in a memo reported by USA Today, was triggered after environmental protesters were able to successfully breach security and hang a banner at the site earlier this year.

Going forward, the U.S. Park Service and Justice Department will be looking at increasing penalties for climbing the monument.
