DHS announces 'Open Government' plan

The Department of Homeland Security announced its Open Government plan this week, which is part of the Obama administration’s initiative to promote transparency within government.

One part of the DHS’ openness plan is to expand the Virtual USA program that the agency launched late last year. Virtual USA is an information sharing initiative developed to enhance communication between, federal, state and local government agencies.

"Openness and transparency between DHS and the public are critical to our security mission," said DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano in prepared statement. "This plan is a critical step towards strengthening public engagement to allow citizens to take a more active role in the safety of their communities."
