HOLLYWOOD, Fla. --

A man was taken to a hospital Wednesday morning after police officers shot him at a Hollywood church.

Lt. Norris Redding, of the Hollywood Police Department, said the shooting happened just before noon at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church at 1925 N. State Road 7.

The Hollywood Police Department said someone called 911 and reported that a man was trying to stab someone inside the church. Police said an officer arrived and found a man with a knife in the church's Bible classroom.

The officer opened fire on the man because he feared for his safety and that of others, Hollywood police said Wednesday afternoon.

The man, who police said is 25 to 30 years old, was shot in the upper torso. He was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital.

No other injuries were reported. It is unclear how many people were in the church at the time.

Police said the shooting is under investigation.
