Dan Dunkel, founder of New Era Associates, recently spoke before a gathering of attendees at the IP-in-Action technical forum in Dallas, Texas.
Attendees listen to series of presentations on IP technology at the IP UserGroup USA event.
Jensen Beach, FL – September 15, 2009 – The IP UserGroup USA’s Technical Forum, IP-in-Action LIVE Dallas, hosted a sophisticated group of over 100 IP security industry representatives, systems integrators and end users, sharing the latest information on IP technology. The August 11, 2009, IP-in-Action LIVE Dallas, held at Cityplace Conference Center, Dallas, Texas, featured a full day of exceptional presentations and a tabletop expo comprised of the leaders in IP Products and Services.
In the Opening Keynote, “How IP Convergence Transforms Security,” Dan Dunkel, Founder, New Era Associates, offered the audience some 21st Century Security Facts. “The security industry is in cultural transformation. A global security executive is emerging,” said Dunkel. “Understanding the past is the key to seeing the future,” he added.
Dunkel put forth a history of security and illustrated that the future is already here. “The web culture is impacting security. It all started with convergence,” he stated. According to Dunkel, convergence matters because global security needs to leverage IP better. “The bad guys are winning,” he pointed out.
Next up, Todd Dunning, Senior Product Manager, Imaging, Pelco presented the Video MasterClass, “Camera System Architecture.” In a clear and concise manner, Dunning explained what affects focus and ways to prevent bad focus from happening. He described what sensors do and how to get the best image quality. Dunning also discussed processing, covering the relationships between frame rates, resolution, compression, analytics and open standards.
IP Solutions, “The New Math: More Cameras + More Resolution + More Retention = Less Infrastructure,” was the title of the presentation by Charles Foley, Chief Executive Officer, TimeSight Systems. Foley offered a new method of retaining video in order to cut down on storage. The new math involves leveraging technology to reduce risk, and understanding the lifecycle of the video to make a determination of how time mitigates risk.
In the next presentation, Emerging Technology, “Free Up Your Network Using Edge Based Video Analytics,” John Whiteman, President Americas, ioimage, covered what analytics can do and how it offers better detection with fewer false alarms. This comprehensive lesson in analytic architecture included illustrations of the connected system and bandwidth consumption.
Integration Insight, “Video Enabling on an Open Platform,” featured Robert Daniels, Gulf Region Territory Manager, Milestone Systems. He defined the phrase Open Platform and gave examples of the increasing value of open platform systems over time. Daniels also presented an understanding Metcalfe’s Law. Metcalfe's law states that the value of a network is proportional to the square of the number of connected users of the system (n2).
Tech Tips, “The Evolution of Megapixel Technology in the Surveillance World,” by Michael Hodor, Vice President of Sales - North America, Arecont Vision, presented statistics on the growth of IP and megapixel video. In addition to a discussion of H.264 compression, Hodor showed ways in which the industry is benefitting from new advances in technology and how surveillance problems are being solved in new ways.
The Business Case, “IP Surveillance at Watertown USA: Protecting A Facility Around the Clock” showcased a water park that is utilizing IP technology. Presenter and system integrator, Wes Usie, Founder, Guardian Alarm Systems, used a NUU0 Inc. system which illustrated that IP does not have to mean a huge install with tons of cameras. Usie brought the possibilities of installing IP to the average dealer. He also suggested that the best way to sell the technology is to show customers the difference in image quality between analog and IP cameras.
