Utah-based APX Alarm, one of the nation’s largest alarm and monitoring firms, announced this week that it has changed its name to Vivint.
The company, which also announced that it’s entering the home automation market, says the name change is reflective of its expanded scope. According to a statement, the name Vivint itself is a combination of the word "vive" meaning "to live" and "intelligent."
"Vivint is a result of our company's evolution. We have a corporate culture of continual innovation and our new name and identity are a reflection of that innovation," said CEO Todd Pedersen in a statement. "Until now, home automation has been considered a luxury for the elite rather than smarter living available to everyone. We are excited to bring our focus, direction and unique business model into the home automation industry."
The company began installing its Go! Control LCD touch screen panels last year in anticipation of the move into the home automation sector. Of the 170,000 customers who have the panels installed, Vivint says more than 15,000 are currently using energy management features that were also rolled out last year.
