SRA subsidiary provides replacement system for the Fiji flight information region
FAIRFAX, Va. , Feb. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- A team led by Era Systems Corporation, a subsidiary of SRA International, Inc. (NYSE: SRX) has been selected by Airports Fiji Ltd. (AFL) to provide a comprehensive, advanced nationwide air traffic management (ATM) replacement system for the Fiji flight information region (FIR).
The core program consists of a national deployment of Era's MSS(sm) surveillance system to provide ADS-B and multilateration surveillance and a new Adacel Aurora air traffic management (ATM) system. The new system will replace the existing ATM system in the area control center (ACC) and in the control towers at Nadi and Nausori International airports.
The extensive package of technology and services provided to AFL also will include assistance in the re-design of the airspace to suit the new capabilities, development of safety case materials to support operational deployment, extensive technical and operational training and the implementation of a FlightYield aviation charging system, which will help AFL accurately assess end-user charges for airspace use.
This will be the most comprehensive deployment of ADS-B surveillance in the world to date because the program fully integrates next-generation technology; not as a supplement for radar coverage, but as an alternative mechanism to transition from procedural airspace to reduced separation based on surveillance.
"Airports Fiji Ltd.'s selection of Era on this ground-breaking project shows the growing confidence not only in next generation technologies but in Era's reputation as the world leader in providing these technologies," said Russell Hulstrom , vice president of Era's Air Traffic Management business. "It is the unique vision of AFL's leadership and the inclusion of so many non-technical elements, such as airspace re-design and operational training that makes this project so ground-breaking. Era is proud to be part of this vision."
"We are very pleased to be part of this program with Era," said Adacel CEO Fred Sheldon . "Our Aurora ATM system software is already being used in the adjacent FIR's by the FAA and Airways New Zealand. With this project, we will provide AFL with equivalent oceanic ATM capabilities as well as en route, approach and tower control in the same system."
The system is planned to be installed and commissioned within 18 months, which will make Fiji the first country in the world with a fully comprehensive, operational ADS-B solution with no reliance on radar.
