Computer hacker hits Iowa Amber Alert website

Website temporarily taken offline

DES MOINES, Iowa --

A criminal investigation is underway into a breach of the state's Amber Alert website, officials said Monday.

An alert was sent out Saturday morning saying the Amber Alert system was active, but the Division of Criminal Investigation said it did not issue an Amber Alert.

The website has been temporarily taken offline while officials investigate how the incident happened. The same computer server also hosts the Iowa State Patrols' crash report website. That website is also temporarily disabled.

Officials have not yet said how long the sites will be down as they continue their investigation.
