Gingrich Challenges the National Security Community to Make Real Change

Dec. 8, 2008

WASHINGTON , Dec. 8 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich today praised a new report outlining the need for fundamental reform to America's national security apparatus.

"Forging a New Shield provides critical insight into our present-day national security practices as well as a truly unique vision as to the changes today's world demands," said Gingrich. "Every member of our national security community needs to take a hard look at the work done by the Project on National Security Reform."

Forging a New Shield makes the critical point that faced with a rapidly changing world, national security must be thought of in much broader terms than it is now. Developing world class scientists and engineers, eliminating our dependence on foreign sources of energy, and relieving the financial strain that health care spending places on our society are all critical national security challenges. Without a clear vision for national security in our Departments of Education, Energy, Commerce, Treasury, and Health and Human Services, America will continue to be at risk.

"It is time for the rest of the government of the United States to realize its critical role in the long-term national security of the United States . We are at a critical juncture in our time, and we must make bold and deliberate decisions today to achieve enduring national security," said Gingrich.

Gingrich also praised Representatives Skelton and Davis as well as Senators Inouye, Levin, and Warner for providing support to the Project on National Security Reform. Additionally, he congratulated those at the Project on National Security Reform and his colleagues in the Guiding Coalition for the truly outstanding work that has gone into Forging a New Shield.
