White paper establishes 'best practices' for implementing smart card-based credentials

A new white paper regarding identification credentials for emergency workers and how to implement them under the Federal Information Processing Standard 201 (FIPS 201) was released by the Smart Card Alliance on Tuesday.

The white paper, "Emergency Response Official Credentials: An Approach to Attain Trust in Credentials across Multiple Jurisdictions for Disaster Response and Recovery," establishes “best practices” for implementing emergency worker credentials and when they should be used under FIPS 201, according to a statement issued by the alliance.

The paper also gives the results of recent pilot demonstrations where first responders were required to show smart-card based credentials. To download the white paper, visit the Smart Card Alliance’s Web site at http://www.smartcardalliance.org.
