NFPA establishes $6M endowment for research foundation

Fire Protection Research Foundation aids in development of fire codes, standards

The National Fire Protection Association announced Tuesday that it has established a $6 million endowment for the Fire Protection Research Foundation, which is a non-profit affiliate of the NFPA devoted to funding research projects focused on fire and life safety.

The foundation, which was formed by the NFPA’s board of directors in 1982, has supported the association’s various initiatives and its research findings have also used by the NFPA in the development of new codes and standards.

"The work directed by the Fire Protection Research Foundation over a span of 25 years has resulted in significant improvements in fire and life safety across the globe," NFPA President James M. Shannon said in a prepared statement. "Today, it is a unique institution within the fire protection community and through this endowment; we ensure it will continue to provide important research well into the future."
