Elkton, Md., Updates Alarm Ordinance

Dec. 21, 2006
City allows four false alarms before turning to fines

The town of Elkton, Md., has updated its alarm ordinance, and many will find the ordinance fairly lenient, compared to similar ordinances being adopted around the country.

Despite an original proposal to start fining alarm system owners who had more than two false alarms in a year, the city retreated and decided to allow each alarm system owner four false alarms per year before starting a fine structure.

The fines start at $50 and progress to a cost of $250. The update of the alarm ordinance was originally proposed by the town's police chief, who was reported to have been facing a high percentage of false alarm calls.
