Using CCTV to Protect Surveillance Cameras

UK facing problem of speed-control cameras being vandalized, fights back with surveillance cameras

Speed cameras could be protected from vandals - by security cameras.

Seven attacks in three years in the Scottish Borders have forced road safety officials to consider security measures.

Lothian and Borders Safety Camera Partnership say machines on the A68, A1 and A697 roads have been set on fire using tyres, badly damaged and in one case pulled over by a rope tied to a car.

Partnership manager Colin McNeil said: "Every time it happens it is inconvenient, it is costly and it is a crime.

"There are companies who would provide us with CCTV coverage of the cameras themselves - the cameras looking after the cameras kind of thing."

But he added: "We need to evaluate that on a cost basis properly before we even consider it."
