Larimer Co., Colo., Develops New False Alarm Ordinance

June 22, 2006
County creates stepped fine structure, non-response option for repeat offenders

The county, which is the home to such towns as Fort Collins and Loveland and which has a population of over 250,000, will now require alarm system owners to register their alarms ($50 to register; $25 annual renewal, $100 fine for non-registered alarms), and will bill for repeated false alarms.

Fines start at $50 and are stair-stepped up to $200 as the number of false alarms increases. The first false alarm will not be fined.

In addition, the county has placed in wording which allows for repeated offenders to be moved to a non-response list. The ordinance would only allow properties to be placed on the non-response list if they had more than give false alarms in the calendar year.
