EAST ST. LOUIS -- A man was shot by a bank security guard Wednesday afternoon at First Illinois Bank, 327 Missouri Ave, police said.

The 57-year-old East St. Louis resident, who police declined to identify, went into the bank about 3 p.m. to transact business.

"He got into an altercation with the security guard, who was a retired East St. Louis police officer," Capt. Lenzie Stewart said. "The suspect pulled a knife on the guard, which led to the shooting."

Officers arrived to find the man shot in the leg, Stewart said.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital. Stewart said the man was still in the hospital in serious condition Thursday.

Stewart would identify neither the shot man nor the bank guard.

No charges had been filed in the case Thursday. Stewart said the case would be presented to St. Clair County State's Attorney Robert Haida's office for review.
