Three-day technology conference used as stage to test response to a possible terrorist attack

Arlington police officers guard the entrance to the Arlington Convention Center during a training exercise Wednesday.

Police officers stood guard at the Wyndham Hotel and stopped traffic near the Arlington Convention Center on Wednesday as part of a large-scale incident training exercise.

Arlington first-responders used a three-day technology conference at the hotel and convention center to simulate how they would manage a major incident, such as a terrorist threat, said Lt. Blake Miller, a police spokesman.

The exercise included setting up barricades near major intersections in the event that the area had to be sealed off and stationing officers at the hotel's entrances and exits.

"This was a chance to use a real-life situation to put these measures into place," Miller said. "It's a learning experience to look at what we'd do in the event that something really did happen."

There were no actual security problems at the World's Best Technologies Showcase, a private conference that featured high-profile leaders from NASA and companies such as DuPont.
