McAllen, Texas police arrest couple tied to Target credit card breach

Couple were reportedly in possession of fraudulent credit cards containing information from breach

Jan. 20--MCALLEN -- Police have arrested a man and a woman on fraud charges tied to the December Target credit card breach.

The arrest took place Sunday when a man and a woman, who have not yet been publicly identified, tried crossing into the U.S. from Reynosa, said Police Chief Victor Rodriguez.

"We received information about their activities and obtained arrest warrants for them," Rodriguez said. "We were able to serve those warrants when they tried coming back from Mexico. During the arrest we found out that they had another stash of fraudulent credit cards on them."

Investigators believe that the credit cards that the couple was using came from the December credit card breach at Target where hackers got into the company's computer system and took the names, credit card information and phone numbers of close to 100 million customers.

"We believe the credit card information came from that security breach," Rodriguez said.

McAllen Police is expected to release information once the couple has been formally charged before a municipal judge.
