Security guard arrested after shooting woman at Orlando apartments

Guard reportedly opened fire on woman after she refused to stop her vehicle

May 29--Orlando Police arrested the security guard who shot a woman at an Orlando apartment complex Wednesday night after she refused to stop for him.

The guard, Jonathan Coleman, tried to stop the woman around 8:30 p.m. at Palm Grove apartments. Coleman stepped in front of the woman's moving car and was hit, police said.

That's when he shot the woman in the arm and wrist, police said.

Investigators, however, determined that Coleman wasn't facing "an imminent threat" when he fired the gun because the car had already passed by him.

Coleman is being charged with aggravated battery with a firearm.

According to the arrest report, the woman drove away from the apartment after she got into a fight with her boyfriend. Coleman saw the boyfriend following the woman. So he stopped her and ordered her to get out of her car, the report said.

Witnesses said they saw Coleman attempt to detain the couple, but the boyfriend told the woman that Coleman wasn't a police officer and that she could leave the scene.

The woman got into her car and started to drive away. Coleman then stepped in front of the car, ordering the woman to stop again but she refused, the report said.

She drove around Coleman, who then grabbed onto the driver's side window before firing four or five shots at the woman, witnesses said.

The driver pulled over at a convenience store around the corner on Mercy Drive and was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center. A manager with Paladin Security, which provides guards for Windsor Cove Apartments near the store, said one of the company's officers rendered first aid until an ambulance arrived.

The guard who police say shot the woman also was hospitalized. Nobody suffered life-threatening injuries.
