80-year-old woman stabbed to death in Ind. hospital

Man, 88, killed in related homicide

July 11--A woman was stabbed to death overnight in a Merrillville hospital room and a man was found stabbed to death in a Gary home that the two shared.

Police in Northwest Indiana believe the two were killed by the same person, who was arrested overnight.

Police in Merrillville were notified of an "assault" at Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus about 12:25 a.m., and when police and security investigated they found a woman had been stabbed to death, Merrillville Chief of Detectives Robert Wiley said.

"During that investigation and search, we learned of the address of the victim, contacted the Gary Police Department and through a coordinated effort they checked the house and the status of anyone living at the residence," Wiley said.

"They discovered a secondary crime scene and began working with Merrillville Police Department detectives," Wiley said.

The woman was identified as Margrine Haywood, 80, of the 1500 block of Hovey Street in Gary. She suffered multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at 1:50 a.m. at the hospital, according to the Lake County Coroner's office. The coroner's office at first incorrectly gave her first name as Margarine.

The second victim was identified as James Haywood, 88, who also lived at the same address. He also suffered multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at 4:50 a.m. at the scene, said officials.

Gary Police Chief Wade Ingram said the suspect, arrested early this morning "is familiar with both deceased individuals and at this time it is an ongoing investigation."

"We have not been able to confirm the identities of the victims and the relationships but we can say there are two homicide victims and we do have one person in custody that we think is responsible for those acts," he said.

Ingram said the two killed were believed to be husband and wife and described them as elderly.

Wiley said officers, who work off duty at the hospital, were at the crime scene in the hospital moments after the attack. Hospital staff were treating the woman when police arrived.
