New legislation introduced in Congress last week by Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) would make it harder for airport security to search travelers’ electronic devices.
Under the Travelers Privacy Protection Act, customs agents would be required to have reasonable suspicion before they could search a U.S. citizen’s laptop or cell phone.
Similar legislation has also been introduced in the House by Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA). Both bills have been sent to committee for further review.
