On Thursday, McAfee, best known for its anti-virus software, announced it has completed the Reconnex. The acquisition gives McAfee an extensive set of data protection solutions; Reconnex was purchased for $46 million.

The Reconnex purchase will be part of McAfee's data protection business unit, and will be headed by Gerhard Watzinger. The Reconnex technologies will be integrated into McAfee's ePolicy Orchestrator solution for general corporate data protection; that integration is expected to begin next year. Among Reconnex's solutions is the ability to "learn" what data needs to be protected. According to the firm, this can be used to identify intellectual property information that has not been expressly classified as such

Watzinger, the general manager of McAfee's data protection unit, said, "This acquisition builds on the McAfee data protection portfolio, solving one of the biggest challenges customers face; namely what information to protect and who should have access to it."

McAfee's data protection group is online at www.mcafee.com/enddataanxiety.
