SIW Radio Episode 2: Preparing for FIPS 201 Implementation

With a looming deadline which requires government agencies to begin FIPS 201 card implementations by Oct. 31, 2006, there is a great deal of concern whether 1) the technology will be ready in time and 2) whether security chiefs at government agencies will have the funding and staff resources to implement FIPS 201 card projects on time.

To discuss those challenges, SecurityInfoWatch.com editor Geoff Kohl caught up with Paul Brisgone by phone live from SecTec '06, a semi-private homeland security expo held in Washington, D.C., for invited government and agency officials. Brisgone serves as the director for ADT's Federal Systems Division, and has been working with federal agencies on their security projects for 20 years.

SIW Radio Episode 4: An HSPD-12/FIPS 201 Discussion

On Thursday, Aug. 24, SecurityInfoWatch.com held a webinar featuring Michael Butler, the director of the Access Card Office for the Department of Defense and Jason Halverson, a smart card analyst with research and consulting firm Frost & Sullivan. The webinar was sponsored by Hirsch Electronics, Bioscrypt, Ultra Electronics (Magicard) and GE Security.

Last week's webinar on HSPD-12/FIPS 201 was so popular, with so many listener-submitted questions, that we brought back Michael Butler and Jason Halverson on Monday morning for a phone call to discuss some of the finer points of HSPD-12/FIPS 201 access control for government facilities, agencies and contractors.

From access control, to smart card capacities, to what the Oct. 27 deadline means for the federal government, Butler and Halverson share their knowledge of this major government security initiative.

SIW Radio Episode 5: Hardening Buildings and Adding Window Protection

SIW Radio's podcast series gets the engine started again this December. We feature an interview by SecurityInfoWatch.com editor Geoff Kohl with Hollice Stone, the director of operations for the New York City office of Hinman Consulting Engineers.

Hollice has looked at building egreess issues pertaining to building hardening, as well as basic parameters that building owners and security directors should be considering when looking at options for hardening against terror threats and natural disasters. One of the unique efforts Hollice has been invovled in is the issue of firefighter safety (ingress and egress) and the concept of a window typing system that would let firefighters know what techniques will need to be used to breach a hardened window.

SIW Radio Episode 6: Security Technologies Coming out of the Labs

SIW Radio host Geoff Kohl looks at new security technologies, including a next-generation 360-degree technology from RemoteReality Corp., as we well as new research into bleeding edge technology applications from the University of Marylands's James Clark School of Engineering. Our interview this week is with James Ionson, Ph.D., CEO of RemoteReality, who talks about the company's new 360-degree technology. Our chat ranges from how this is different from what IPIX had been doing, to the concept of video-based situation awareness, and of course, what the commercial sector can do with this kind of technology. The company is even looking at a camera design with a 16-megapixel CMOS chip that can count the legs on a spider at 2,000 meters (OK, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but the company is testing a 16-megapixel chip).

In Episode 11, we catch up with Jason Hart, CEO of Cryptocard Europe, to talk about surveillance cameras that are running root passwords and which can be "hacked". Also on this program, Joseph Costa, CEO of videoNEXT, discusses the firm's expansion into the dealer/integrator channel as they go to market with $5.4 million in new funding for the video management solutions firm.

To follow along with Jason Hart's "hack" into unsecured network surveillance cameras, you can use the following Google searches that will lead you right to the lenses of the many hundreds, perhaps thousands, of unsecured network surveillance cameras installed around the world:

Episode 13: New Image Sensor Technology for Security Cameras

The result of the new pattern, says DeLuca, is that the sensors are better in low-light situations, and can help freeze the image better to reduce motion blurs, and will cut out some of the "noise" that tends to appear when digital images are taken in low-light situations. Do these sound like benefits that could help solve some of your low-light problems with security cameras providing poor image quality? We also touch upon the differences in resolution between monochromatic (black and white) images and color images.

Episode 29: Security Integrator Partnerships

For our July 22, 2008, episode of SIW Radio from SecurityInfoWatch.com, we take the time to speak with three integrators on how they do "partnerships" -- with vendors, with subcontractors, with competitors, with potential business lead generators. SecurityInfoWatch.com's Geoff Kohl and Security Dealer & Integrator magazine's Deborah O'Mara speak with Wayne Becker, vice president of business development at Communication Systems Inc. (Allentown, Penn.), Jeff Brummett, president/COO, American Sentry Guard (Greenwood, Ind.), and Alan Kruglak, senior vice president, Genesis Security Systems (Germantown, Md.). Alan, Jeff and Wayne share insights into how they're "doing" partnerships, and we close with a honest look at what the current economic climate means for commercial security systems integrators.

Show Notes:
For more on partnering, the recommended reading for this podcast is the May 2008 issue of Security Dealer & Integrator, specifically the article by Karen Duane Johnson titled "Leading integrators discuss partnering and selling value."

Episode 30 addresses the concept of "lean security," a term adapted from the concept of lean manufacturing. Then we turn our focus to the GSO 2010 and GSI 2010 security events happening this week in California.

This week's episode is a follow-up from our webinar last week on Feb. 5, 2009. That webinar, sponsored by Cisco, presented information on IP video for government and educational scenarios, and it also presented an in-depth case study on the protection of two Amtrak facilities. Since we ran out of time on the webinar itself to do our normal Q&A, we saved our readers' questions and answered a handful of them in this 30 minute SIW Radio podcast episode. Joinining us on the podcast are Steve Collen, Lindsay Hiebert and Paul Thatcher of Cisco, Keith White from Intrametrix Consulting and Kevin Dailey from Consiliant Technologies (the integrator on the Amtrak project). We discuss a variety of topics, including EMP threats, grants and funding sources for security projects, management of software upgrades in integrated physical security systems, pole-mounted cameras, video analytics, working with legacy security technologies over the network, and wireless video transmission issues such as latency, jittery video and lag. If you haven't viewed the webinar yet, I highly recommend you check it out "go here to register to view the webcast.
