Texas utility deploys SmarterFence solution

Austin, TX (PRWEB) December 17, 2009 -- Smarter Security Systems, provider of intelligent entrance control and outdoor security solutions, announced today that the Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative (GVEC) recently installed SmarterFence at a second substation after a successful first deployment of SmarterFence and SmarterBeam to provide perimeter protection at a new substation late last year.

"We sought to establish a model for future compliance with NERC (North American Reliability Council) standards with new substation construction," said Bernie Acre, Information Services Division Manager for GVEC, "and the Smarter Outdoor solutions are a key part of our physical security and compliance, as they provide us early warning of intrusions. The SmarterFence design has worked out well for us because we receive a minimal number of nuisance alarms and the system is intuitive to configure for our specific use and location. It is also a relatively easy system configuration to learn, which enables us to install SmarterFence ourselves without outside contract services. This makes it more cost-effective as well."

When opening its newest substation in a remote area late in 2008, GVEC installed a variety of security solutions to increase physical security and to prepare the substation for potential inclusion with NERC standards for Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP).

SmarterFence secures the perimeter fence and two SmarterBeams protect the two gates to the substation. Both products easily integrate with a DVR system to trigger fixed and PTZ cameras to operate upon alarm and to notify the utility's 24-hour control center so operators can perform real-time video verification of the alarm. The alarms also tie into GVEC's card access security system, which further secures the facility's interior building.

"GVEC is a terrific example of how to secure a fenced property and how our Smarter Outdoor solutions complement and integrate with each other and with other technologies to provide the reliable protection needed," said Jeff Brown, President of Smarter Security Systems. "We are pleased to be working with GVEC in its ongoing efforts to secure its substations and deliver uninterrupted power to its many member customers."

SmarterFence is a fiber optic intrusion detection system designed to protect facilities by alarming any attempt to cut or climb a perimeter security fence. SmarterBeam is a passive infrared motion detector which projects an invisible infrared curtain up to 500 feet to detect and alarm any passage through the curtain. Each provides early warning of security breaches to allow timely response and limit damages.

The Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative provides reliable electric services to nearly 66,000 member accounts in 13 counties in south central Texas. As a member-owned utility, it works to give back to the communities it serves, and for more than seventy years has focused on supplying great customer service and quality electric power at the lowest possible price.
