Patent suit against Tyco dismissed

Canadian court rules competitor’s patents are invalid

Tyco Safety Products Canada, the manufacturer of DSC alarm panels, announced this week that a patent suit filed against it by a competitor has been dismissed.

The lawsuit, which was initially filed by Paradox Security Systems in 2004, claimed that certain legacy DSC panels infringed upon its patents, but the Federal Court of Canada ruled that the company’s patents were invalid.

According to a statement issued by Tyco regarding the case, the court noted that Paradox had improperly modified the scope of its patents just weeks before filing the lawsuit by filing disclaimers against the patents and that the company had admitted in those disclaimers that the original claims of its patents were too broad.
