India's largest hydroelectric plant deploys IP video solutions

Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station standardizes on DVTel

Ridgefield Park, NJ, September 21, 2010 — DVTel, Inc., a multiple award-winning market leader in Smart Security Solutions, announced today that the Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS), India’s largest hydroelectric power project, has installed DVTel’s intelligent Security Operations Center (iSOC) to protect sensitive operational areas of the power station.

The project uses both fixed and PTZ cameras from DVTel’s Altitude line, and they are used to monitor sensitive areas of the plant, such as the inside of the hydroelectric plant’s headrace tunnel, the longest in India, and power generation and distribution areas of the facility. Officials at Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVN), operators of the power station, chose DVTel and systems integrator Optimum Security Solutions to install the iSOC system and DVTel cameras, conquering major topographical and environmental challenges such as mountainous terrain and hot, humid operating conditions inside turbine rooms.

"The DVTel system has not only enhanced the security level of this plant but also created a secure and efficient environment," said Shri Manoj Kumar, Senior Manager (Elec) of SJVNL.

SJVNL security officials are using iSOC to monitor the sprawling hydroelectric plant, which stretches more than 31 miles (50 kilometers) from the location of the dam site to the power generation facilities. iSOC creates a common operational picture that enables users to capture, manage, analyze, integrate, and then act on previously unorganized and overly complex data. The results are improved reaction time, enhancing operator productivity and a reduction in incidents.

Located in the foothills of the Himalaya Mountains in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, NJHPS is the major source of power to the Northern Grid of India. Considered by many as a technological benchmark for future power projects in India, NJHPS has added 1,500 MW of capacity to the grid since the station’s first unit came online in 2003. NJHPS is owned by a joint venture between the Indian Government and the Government of Himachal Pradesh.

"DVTel is pleased to work with Optimum Security Solutions and SJVNL to protect this massive engineering project so crucial to the infrastructure of Himachal Pradesh," said Eli Gorovici, President and CEO of DVTel, Inc. "Our iSOC platform is an ideal solution for effectively monitoring and managing the various video feeds which proactively react when suspicious activity occurs."

Inderjit Sehrawat, Country Manager of India, says, "We are very happy to be associated with the largest Hydro Power Project in India. This adds to the string of DVTel's very prestigious installations in India. We stand committed to grow and serve the Indian market."
