Manufacturer introduces industry's first multi-channel encoder/decoder

Bosch Security Systems, a full-line manufacturer of high-quality security solutions, has released the VIP X1600 XF, the industry’s first multi-channel encoder / decoder with high-speed fiber connectivity. With the new device, Bosch has added multi-channel decoding capabilities to its award-winning VIP X1600 series, now enabling customers to combine encoder and decoder modules within a single rack-mountable base unit.

Up to four 'hot swappable' encoder and decoder modules, including previously-released VIP X1600 encoder modules, can be mixed and matched within the dual redundant power supply VIP X1600 XF base unit. This feature allows users to add or exchange modules at any time without interrupting transmission to existing channels. Encoding and decoding capabilities encased in one device can also help reduce hardware costs and save valuable space in some end user applications.

The VIP X1600 XF series delivers increased network connectivity options for designing solutions that will best fit the end user’s specific requirements for video storage. The devices feature a 1 Gbps Ethernet port on the rear and two Ethernet ports and a 1 Gbps small form factor pluggable optical transceiver slot on the front of the base units – allowing for system designs that incorporate direct connection to an iSCSI storage array or fiber connection to a remote storage area network, among others, and making inside-rack cabling easier.

VIP X1600 XFMD decoder modules feature four analog video outputs plus bi-directional audio and are capable of decoding up to 10 MPEG-4 video streams each at a maximum resolution of 4CIF at 25/30 images per second or up to four MPEG-2 video streams without audio. The decoder can also be set up to display four full screen video signals or two full screen and two quad views. This feature allows 10 MPEG-4 live video streams from a single decoder module to be displayed on a compact monitor wall. If four decoder modules are used, the system can serve a monitor wall of up to 16 analog monitors capable of displaying live video from 40 cameras – all driven by application-specific hardware without any additional PCs required.

Changing the setup and camera selection in small installations is easy with the decoder’s web-based user interface or via a video management system. The system administrator can run a network scan to identify all cameras on the network, then assign the output of each camera to a specific analog monitor using either on-screen selection buttons or a drag and drop function. The user interface also features an on-screen autoconnect switch that allows the system configuration to be stored and automatically re-established in the event of a loss of power or a network failure.
