(TSX:EXC), the global leader in active-infrared night vision surveillance equipment, announced at the 12th World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in San Francisco the release of a new line of advanced performance license plate capture cameras, the REG-L1. The innovation behind the REG(R) Series of License Plate Capture cameras was recently allowed a utility patent in the USA.

REG-L1, featuring DHC-Imaging(TM), delivers advanced performance license plate capture and represents the third generation of license plate capture solutions from Extreme CCTV. Based on award-winning technology currently in use in large-scale projects in London, Stockholm and the USA, REG-L1 incorporates innovations in active-infrared, optics and Extreme's Ambient Rejection technology to deliver high-contrast license plate images.
The REG-L1 incorporates Definitive High Contrast (DHC) Imaging, providing more powerful infrared illumination using Metaphase-LEDs, increasing IR power four times, and improving ambient rejection by eight times over other types of LPR cameras, for better performance against direct sunlight, bright headlights and "difficult" plates.
Ambient Rejection technology allows REG-L1 cameras to operate under any ambient lighting condition, from total darkness to direct glare from sunlight and high-beam headlights. Improved power management enables the cameras to be powered directly from a car battery, such as a police cruiser or parking enforcement vehicle. REG-L1 also has the ability to capture images of new "digital license plates," widely expected to be the future standard format of license plates. REG-L1 captures license plates from vehicles moving at speeds up to 160 kilometers per hour (approximately 100 miles per hour), allowing full operation for highway and other high-speed applications.
The demand for effective, reliable license plate capture grows each year as more and more end-users in ITS, law enforcement and security recognize the effectiveness of the technology. The ITS industry is estimated to be worth $30 to $40 billion globally, and includes toll collection, traffic violation enforcement, vehicle tracking, travel time analysis, public safety and Amber-Alert.
