Purchase adds more than 200 commercial property clients to Safeguard's Santa Fe portfolio

Safeguard Security and Communications, a leader in commercial, residential and institutional security and monitoring services, acquired the alarm division of Santa Fe, N.M.-based Akal Security. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The purchase of Akal's alarm division adds more than 200 commercial property clients to Safeguard's Santa Fe portfolio, making Safeguard the second-largest security company in the area.

"Acquiring Akal's alarm division was strategically valuable to Safeguard in terms of increasing market share," said Safeguard CEO John Jennings. "It expands our presence in the commercial market, while strengthening our overall position in the Santa Fe area."

Safeguard began operating in Santa Fe in 2001, concentrating primarily on home security. Prior to the Akal acquisition, roughly 90 percent of Safeguard's installations in the Santa Fe market were residential.

Headquartered in Scottsdale, Ariz., Safeguard Security and Communications started in 1958, providing patrol services to winter homes in the upscale Phoenix suburb of Paradise Valley, Ariz. Today Safeguard provides a full range of alarm systems, surveillance, controlled access, Internet security and home entertainment products to more than 12,000 residential and corporate clients throughout Arizona and New Mexico.
