Watching as Technology Matures

By Cygnus Security Group Publishers

IP video and video analytics have changed the face of surveillance in the last several years. We on the editorial staff of Security Dealer and Security Technology & Design have watched this evolution with keen interest, and last year we launched our first IP and Intelligent Video supplement designed specifically to address it. This year has seen IP and IV expanding more quickly than ever, and at the same time presenting yet more challenges and opportunities for you, our readers.

Some security technology dealers, installers and users have jumped into this new environment with excitement, while others have held back to see how the technology and the adoption patterns will develop. IP video has been around long enough to overcome many of its initial shortcomings and to win over many of its detractors; new installations abound not only in new construction but also in retrofits.

If you're a security director interested in migrating your current analog system to IP, or a dealer or installer whose customers are headed that way, check out Rich Anderson's article, “Moving to IP,” on page S8. Or, if you'd simply like to see how other facilities and installers have successfully implemented an IP system, you'll find the story of how one large facility saved money on theirs on page S24.

Intelligent video has proven more of a challenge for everyone in the industry. There is still a lot of confusion floating around about terminology, as well as what this technology can do and what products are available in the IV field. We worked with the member integrators of SecurityNet to arrange bench tests of several of the major products out there, developing unique product reviews to help you cut through the muck. You'll find their exclusive article, along with a matrix chart of products and their features, starting on page S12.

As these technologies continue to mature in 2007, we at Security Dealer and Security Technology & Design will be there watching and keeping you informed.

Sincerely,

The Cygnus Security Group Editors
