The town of Alburtis, Penn., has approved an ordinance that requires carbon monoxide detection for residential facilities like hotels as well as for rental properties.

The ordinance affects apartment buildings, hotels, care facilities, dormitories and other similar residential facilities, as well as event/assembly type locations like restaurants and meeting halls. Such facilities will be required to install carbon monoxide detectors. Exempted facilities include those that do not use fuel-burning heaters or which are not attached to garages; private residences are also not affected. The ordinance will be effective on Nov. 15, 2008.
