Beckett Brown International, a former Maryland-based private investigations firm reportedly spied on various activist groups and corporations for their clients, according to an article published in the Washington Post.

One of the firm’s former investors, John C. Dodd III told the Washington Post that BBI, which went out of business in 2000, spied on numerous consumer advocacy groups and watchdog organizations, such as Greenpeace.

Dodd sued his former BBI partners for breach of contract and lost, but he managed to keep more than 100 boxes of records, which he reportedly began combing through a couple of years ago.

Now former targets of the firm’s investigation have begun paying Dodd or a lawyer working with him for access to the documents.
