The National Fire Protection Association announced a new initiative on Wednesday that encourages the adoption of fire sprinklers in new one and two-family homes.

Under the new initiative, which has been dubbed “Fire Sprinkler Initiative: Bringing Safety Home,” the NFPA will be providing materials and resources to people and organizations that will provide them with information on the benefits of automatic fire sprinklers.

According to the NFPA, 80 percent of fire deaths occur in homes and are responsible for killing nearly 3,000 people each year. The organizations says that sprinklers and working smoke alarms can reduce the chances of a home’s occupant dying in a fire by 82 percent.

"The fire sprinkler initiative will make available important tools that can be used by people working on the front lines to get sprinkler requirements passed in their communities," NFPA President James M. Shannon said in a prepared statement. "For years, the NFPA has been a strong supporter of home fire sprinklers through our public education and code development efforts. In this campaign, we’ve taken the next step to support public safety advocacy and help save lives."

The only thing fires sprinklers do is save lives... More laws need to be passed.
