The port's $20 million Security Command and Control Center will house its security personnel and regional agencies. Designed to be a regional resource, the building will include emergency management facilities that include a Department Operations Center to be used to coordinate law enforcement response to emergencies at any point within the San Pedro Bay port complex. The 25,000 sq.- ft. building is being funded by the Port of Long Beach and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which contributed $8.1 million of the total estimated cost.
The Command and Control Center will not only be the communications hub and headquarters for the Port of Long Beach Security Division and Harbor Patrol, it will also contain security units from the Long Beach Police Department and Port of Los Angeles. Should an emergency occur, the facility is designed to accommodate the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Marine Exchange.
At the groundbreaking for the new Center, Long Beach Harbor President, James C. Hankla, said that the Center, "will give us the room to house a growing Security Division, room for the new tools they need and room for our partners to work with us in an emergency."
