May 31--Bay Area cities and counties will receive $28.3 million in federal funding for counterterrorism projects this year, the Department of Homeland Security announced today.
The region's leaders had requested the federal government for $322.2 million over two years to pay for a variety of projects, including improved communications and protection of transportation systems and infrastructure.
Overall, California will receive more than $136 million, including about $7.4 million for Sacramento. The Los Angeles-Long Beach region will receive $80.6 million, the largest allocation of any region in the state.
A total of about $760 million was available to 46 urban areas around the country.
Because of a change in federal rules, San Jose, Oakland, San Francisco and the surrounding cities applied grants as a region this year. Applying separately last year, the three cities received a total of $33 million -- $6 million of which went to San Jose.
