From Schools to Hospitals: Why the Nation’s Most Vulnerable Verticals Are Prime Targets

Schools and hospitals anchor American communities, yet their open, mission-driven nature makes them increasingly vulnerable to both cyber and physical threats. As attacks grow more frequent and complex, this panel examines how education and healthcare leaders can build resilient, integrated security strategies without compromising care, learning, or community trust.

Summary

Schools, hospitals, and other care-oriented institutions sit at the heart of American communities. Yet, their mission-driven focus has also made them prime targets for an evolving landscape of physical and cyber threats. Over the past decade, K–12 districts, higher-education campuses, and healthcare facilities have experienced a surge in attacks, ranging from ransomware and data breaches to acts of violence and disruptions to critical infrastructure. Several factors contribute to this vulnerability: legacy systems that are difficult to modernize, budget constraints that delay security upgrades, and highly valuable data that attracts both criminal organizations and opportunistic threat actors.

These environments also operate with unique operational challenges. Schools must balance safety with open, welcoming atmospheres. Hospitals must maintain 24/7 access while protecting life-critical equipment, clinical workflows, and patient privacy. Both sectors have increasingly interconnected technologies—such as IoT devices, cloud systems, and electronic records—that expand the attack surface and complicate incident response.

As threats continue to escalate, security leaders recognize the urgent need for integrated, intelligence-driven approaches that blend physical security, cybersecurity, emergency preparedness, and human-factor considerations. This panel will explore how institutions can strengthen resilience while maintaining the essential services and trust their communities depend on.
