A roundup of recent unique security applications and installations

Hillfresh Fruit & Vegetable Distributor

Hillfresh, a major Dutch fruit and vegetable distributor, has deployed IQinVision HD megapixel camera technology to improve security and operations at its Barendrecht facility in the Netherlands. GP Installaties is the project integrator and Xserius is the value-added distributor for this installation. Hillfresh's 123,785 sq ft. facility handles 21,000 pallets on an annual basis in conducting its global business of importing and exporting fruits and vegetables.

The company decided to implement video surveillance to address a number of business challenges: to stop truck drivers sleeping on the job, more effectively manage trucks entering and exiting the docking stations, ensure staff are staying on the job, and to prevent abuse of parking spaces.

In consultation with GP Installaties, Hillfresh deployed 21 IQeye HD megapixel cameras (out of 52 cameras total) in multiple key strategic locations. System installation was completed in early 2010 and features Mirasys Video Management software. The system provides 100-percent coverage of the Hillfresh property, face recognition capability at warehouse entrance points, and the ability to read and record license plates of all vehicles entering the premises.

Ready-Mix Concrete Plant

Rohrer's Quarry Inc. in Lititz, Pa., is using a Bosch IP video surveillance solution to oversee operations at its ready-mix concrete plant. Installed by Mid Atlantic Concrete Equipment, the system improves efficiency by enabling the plant operator to monitor several areas that are essential for proper mixing of concrete and for discharging it into awaiting trucks.

The new central mix plant features three 200-ton cement silos, six compartments containing a total of 340 tons of aggregate, and a 430-foot vertical curve conveyer. Plant operations are observed with an 11-camera surveillance system.

Bosch FlexiDome IP Day/Night cameras capture video of the most critical points inside the plant - showing crisp images and a high-level of detail of areas where conveyer belts unload onto other belts and where the concrete contents are poured into the mixer. Outside the plant, cameras are positioned to view the location where concrete is discharged into the Quarry's 20-truck fleet of transit mixers. A camera installed on the roof of the building that houses the plant also provides surveillance of the surrounding property.

The FlexiDome cameras feature a clear polycarbonate dome bubble with a UV blocking anti-scratch coating and can operate in temperatures from 14ø to 104ø Fahrenheit and in 20- to 80-percent relative humidity. The cameras are also IP54 and NEMA-3R rated against dust and water ingress, providing protection from conditions common within a concrete-mixing plant.

U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve

ARINC Inc. has delivered two AIM Security Management Systems to enhance security operations at Gulf Coast storage sites of the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR).

The SPR's four underground storage sites hold about 700 million barrels of crude oil which is sold during emergencies to prevent oil shortages and price spikes that might damage the economy. Because SPR storage sites are considered part of U.S. national security, they have been equipped over the years with many different types of security and surveillance technologies.

The technology operates as an Alarm Display and Annunciation System (ADAS), to manage all these on-site systems and provide a new layer of supervisory control and communications.

The AIM integration will provide efficient local security management for each SPR site. ARINC's customer, AGSC Constructors Inc., is a Federal Small Business Contractor that manages modifications at the SPR storage sites for the Department of Energy.

Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station

The Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS), India's largest hydroelectric power project, has installed DVTel's intelligent Security Operations Center (iSOC) to protect sensitive operational areas of the power station.

The project uses both fixed and PTZ cameras from the supplier's Altitude line, and they are used to monitor sensitive areas of the plant, such as the inside of the hydroelectric plant's headrace tunnel - the longest in India - and power generation and distribution areas of the facility.

Officials at Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVNL), operators of the power station, chose DVTel and systems integrator Optimum Security Solutions to install the iSOC system and cameras, conquering major topographical and environmental challenges such as mountainous terrain and hot, humid operating conditions inside turbine rooms.

SJVNL security officials are using the system to monitor the sprawling hydroelectric plant, which stretches more than 31 miles (50 kilometers) from the location of the dam site to the power generation facilities. The system creates a common operational picture that enables users to capture, manage, analyze, integrate, and then act on previously unorganized and overly complex data. The results are improved reaction time, enhancing operator productivity and a reduction in incidents.

Shanghai Industrial Building

Multiple models of Infinova's IP and analog cameras, along with its matrix switchers, are providing a coexistent surveillance solution for a major R&D complex, the Shanghui City Industrial Building, in the Baoshan District of Shanghai. Besides the R&D facilities above ground, there are two floors underground incorporating the parking lot, bicycle garage, civil air defense and electro-mechanical equipment room, among others. The complex covers more than 750,000 square feet.

Depending on the application and location, cameras are located at the entrance and exit gates on the ground floor, garage entrance and exit, underground parking lot, elevator cars, and main passageways on each floor. Based on the security goal for the locale, the complex uses Infinova V1727 IP PTZ dome cameras, V1026-1and V1028-1 fixed cameras and V5411 fixed minidome cameras.

The supplier's V2060 TCP/IP Network Video Switchers feature pre-configuration for reliability plus its open architecture fosters easy installation, operation and expansion. Using microprocessor technology, the V2060 series can provide automated electronic surveillance or allow a single user to control an entire CCTV system of up to 4096 video inputs by 512 video outputs.

For display, the system incorporates 38 sets of 21-inch monitors. For storage, there are 26 sets of 16-channel DVRs. The system can store 15 days of images, approximately 3,900GB on four 1,000GB hard disks.
