Expanded Educational Offerings at ASIS 2011

July 13, 2011
New industry partnerships result in more than 180 different sessions

Security practitioners from across the industry will find some exciting new offerings at the ASIS International 57th Annual Seminar and Exhibits (ASIS 2011) in Orlando, Fla., Sept. 19-22. New partnerships with (ISC)2 (“ISC-squared”) and PSA Security Network among others, broaden the scope of the educational program and open valuable new networking opportunities. In total, this year’s Seminar will offer attendees more than 180 educational sessions across 18 tracks.

(ISC)2, the largest non-for-profit membership body of certified information security professionals and administrators of the CISSP, will collocate its first global conference with the ASIS Annual Seminar and Exhibits at the Orange County Convention Center from Sept. 19-21. The annual event will bring together world-renowned information security thought leaders and luminaries for discussions on a wide range of information security issues.

“The roles of the information security and traditional security professionals within the global business marketplace are rapidly evolving and converging,” says ASIS President Raymond T. O’Hara, CPP. “By collocating our annual events, our combined memberships of more than 100,000 professionals gain access to core knowledge and best practices across the full spectrum of information and traditional security. The opportunity to connect with one’s security counterpart and to build a solid practitioner network is one of the most valuable benefits to be derived from this relationship.”

The (ISC)2 Security Congress program offers educational tracks that include Cloud Security, Governance Regulation and Compliance, Application Security, Mobile Security and Social Media, and the Swiss Army Knife — Tools, Tips and Techniques for the Well-Rounded Infosecurity Professional.

General education sessions, networking events and the exhibit floor are open to registered attendees for either event.

In addition to the expanded programming for information security professionals, ASIS will introduce a new educational track for security systems integrators. The track is endorsed by PSA Security Network, the world’s largest electronic security cooperative representing security system integrators. Nine sector-specific sessions will be presented — each providing unique insights from security end-users into the security requirements and demands within a vertical industry sector.

This year’s Seminar features fascinating keynote speakers, including former Governor of Florida Jeb Bush (on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 8 a.m.) and former President of Mexico Vicente Fox (on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 8 a.m.). Entrepreneur and visionary Burt Rutan will address attendees at the closing luncheon.

As the 43rd Governor of the state of Florida, Bush’s achievements include education reform, closing the achievement gap for Florida students, and yearly tax cuts, which helped Florida lead the nation in job growth. Co-author of Profiles in Character, a book profiling 14 of Florida’s civic heroes, he currently heads his own consulting business and is chairman of the Foundation for Excellence in Education. Bush will speak on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 8 a.m.

A visionary leader with a deep understanding of the economic and social challenges facing Latin America, President Fox is one of the world’s most important voices on the contemporary geo-political landscape and the role of business in the developing world. In his autobiography, Revolution of Hope, President Fox outlines his vision of hope for the future of the Americas and the role of business in the developing world. President Fox will address attendees on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 8 a.m.

On Thursday, Sept. 22 at 12:00 p.m., entrepreneur and designer Burt Rutan will address attendees at the closing luncheon. Named “Entrepreneur of the Year” by Inc. Magazine and described by Newsweek as “the man responsible for more innovations in modern aviation than any living engineer,” Rutan is a visionary with a passion for the advancement of technology. Recent projects include the White Knight and SpaceShipOne, the world’s first privately funded manned spacecraft.

Attendees will have an opportunity to prepare for professional certification in the days preceding the Seminar in Orlando. ASIS certification reviews will be offered Sept. 16-17 for the Certified Protection Professional (CPP), Professional Certified Investigator (PCI) and Physical Security Professional (PSP) examinations. On Sept. 17-18, a series of (ISC)2 credential clinics are scheduled (CISSP, CSSLP, CAP and SSCP), as well as an official two-day review seminar for both CSSLP and CISSP.

A seminar tradition, ASIS invites active law enforcement and military professionals to attend the keynote, participate in educational sessions and the exhibit floor — at no charge on Law Enforcement/Military Appreciation Day on Wednesday, Sept. 21.
